The "nickname," if you will, is sometimes "The Stick." One of the first "names" to play the Chapman Stick was/is Alphonso Johnson (Weather Report). It's really a bass, more than anything -- not "an electrical instrument," and much of the sound is created by TAPPING the strings with both hands. I'd also add that one never STOPS learning how to play the Chapman Stick. Hope that helps! I've never seen any instrument like that before. Looks like they took the part of a guitar that people string tight for finger tapping and just made it a whole damn instrument.
